For the 2017-18 School year we are making a few adjustments to our process. The reason for these changes is due to the need for increased safety during arrival and dismissal and we are now a K-8 only school. It is critical that we are patient with the process, especially the first 2-3 weeks. We truly believe that this new process will increase student, staff, and driver safety but it also allows us to offer Spanish, Dance, Music, PE, Art, and many more opportunities K-8th grade.

So what are the changes?

  1. All students will arrive (7:30-8:00) and be picked up (3:00-3:30) at the same time
  2. All students/family will be given a number to help speed up carpool (dismissal only)
  3.  All students will be dismissed from the open space
    • Increased supervision and safety
    • Reduced exposure to the elements
  4. K-4 students will be dropped off/picked up in the front of the building
  5. K-4 drop off/pick up area has moved closer to middle school to be in front of the open space
    • K-4 Students will enter building through open space
  6. 5-8 students will be dropped off/picked up in rear of building
    • 5th graders will enter in back of elementary school
    • 6th-8th graders will enter in back of middle school
  7. Older sibling (5-8) will go to the younger sibling (K-4) area for drop off/pick up
  8. Van and Daycare drop off/pick up will occur in the front of the building (designated area)
  9. We will use Student Safety Patrol to help with the drop off/pick up process

We understand that by having the same dismissal time for K-8 as opposed to staggering the process it may take longer. However, we needed to have our entire staff on the same schedule to ensure that our students are fully exposed to all the enrichment and extra-curricular activities KHS has to offer. Also, by having the same schedule we can increase our supervision, which in turn creates a safer environment for our students. We truly hope that a better day-to-day educational experience and increased safety, outweighs the delayed drop off/pick up process.

With any change there may be a few bumps in the road (pun intended). But we will be reviewing and analyzing this process and making and communicating adjustments as needed. Your feedback back on the process is greatly appreciated. We are asking for your patience and understanding as we adjust to the new process.

The following section details both the drop off and pick up process. In essence K-4 to the front and 5-8 to the back.

Here is a brief list of key points to remember. By working as a community we are confident that we will be able to have a safer dismissal process. It is our goal to make this process the safest it can be but also complete the process within the 30 minutes window. In order to meet that goal it is important that we all remember the following key points:

Key Points to Remember:

  • Safety not speed is our HIGHEST priority
    • Please be patient with our staff, our students, and our fellow KHS carpool drivers
  • Older siblings (5-8) will go with younger sibling (K-4)
  • Students/families will be given a number to be used during carpool
    • Please place on mirror
  • All student dismissals will come out of the open space
  • Be alert and kind to KHS staff
  • Drop off and pick up only in designated areas
  • Student Safety Patrol will be helping with opening and closing doors
  • Please be ready when getting to drop off/pick up areas
  • There are designated waiting areas if your child/children are delayed

There is a map (see below) that provides a visual example of the process.

Send all questions, comments, or concerns to Dr. Tracy at tracy@kestrelheights.org.

Looking forward to a great 2017-18 school year, where we will be SOARing together.
