Intervention Program

This year Kestrel Heights Charter School has implemented an Intervention Program supporting students who have been identified as needing additional support in the areas of Language Arts/Literacy and/or Mathematics as measured by our iReady Diagnostic Assessment and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process. MTSS is a systemic, continuous improvement framework in which data-based problem solving and decision-making is practiced across all levels of the educational system for supporting students. Based on this screening process, your child may be identified as eligible for additional support in reading or mathematics. Please note that parent referrals will not be accepted and that scholars are selected based on specific data measures identified by the school.

If your child is identified for additional academic support, a member of the Intervention Team will likely deliver instruction during your scholar’s intervention block, or during the small group portion of core instruction. Intervention is an essential component of Kestrel’s instructional framework and aligns with our layered approach to learning. During intervention students will receive targeted instruction in:

  • Phonological Awareness

  • Phonics

  • High-Frequency Words (Sight Words)

  • Vocabulary

  • Reading Comprehension (Fiction/Nonfiction)

  • Numbers and Operation

  • Algebra and Algebraic Thinking

  • Measurement and Data

  • Geometry

  • Number Fluency

The Intervention Team will work collaboratively with the classroom teacher to ensure the coordination of services. Ongoing monitoring of progress will continue for the length of time your child is receiving services. When your scholar has shown significant progress, the Intervention Team will conduct an assessment of skills and strategies to determine if intervention services are no longer needed. In consultation with the classroom teacher, the Intervention Team may exit the scholar based on classroom performance and proficiency levels.

As we prepare our scholars for college and career readiness, we aim to provide the necessary skills our scholars need to achieve proficiency. Your support at home will continue a process of communication and cooperation between parents and the school. When the home and school connect, children will learn the meaning of personal success and academic achievement. If you would like any further information, please feel free to reach out to the Director of Instruction for more information.
