Durham, NC The Kestrel Heights Charter School Board of Directors and School Administration have scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for Wednesday, March 16, at 3:45 p.m. to celebrate with the community and launch construction of the new elementary school. The expansion project will create a 27,342 square foot building, constructed directly behind the existing 37,323 sq ft middle school campus located at 4700 South Alston Avenue in Durham County.

The $18.9 million project will be funded through tax-exempt bonds in partnership with Rosemaw Investment Management Firm. In addition to Rosemawr, Kestrel Heights appreciates the collaboration of our bond team which includes Alliance Education Services, BC Construction, Truist, IceMiller, McGuireWoods, Parker Poe, School Improvement Partners, and UMB Financial Corporation who are all making this exciting new journey a reality.

The opening of the new multi-level elementary school is concurrent with Kestrel Heights Charter School’s 25th Anniversary. Construction for the structure, which will house kindergarten through 5th-grade scholars, is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2022. The building will include 18 classrooms, two large elective rooms, 5 administrative offices, and intervention rooms, as well as improvements to the campus including new sidewalks, parking spaces, outdoor improvements with a redesigned stormwater basin area, and traffic queuing extensions. The addition will create the opportunity to welcome additional families into the Kestrel Heights community.

Kestrel Heights Charter School, one of the oldest established charter schools in North Carolina, was founded in 1998 and currently serves approximately 500 kindergarten through 8th-grade scholars. Kestrel’s mission is to empower our scholars to sharpen academic knowledge, demonstrate creative expression, and expand leadership abilities to prepare for success in high school, college, and beyond.

While the BC Construction Group has begun preparing the area for construction, the official groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Wednesday, March 16th at 3:45 pm. at 4700 South Alston Avenue. Members of the press are encouraged to attend.
