HOW DOES IT WORK?

THE LOTTERY

• Any child who is qualified under the laws of the state for admission to a public school is qualified for admission to a charter school. In order to apply to a charter school, a parent or guardian must be physically living – “domiciled” – in the state of North Carolina at the time of application. Non-domiciled families must wait until having moved to NC to apply to the school.
• Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, Kestrel Heights School may refuse admission to any student who has been expelled or suspended from a public school under G. S. 115C-391 until the period of suspension or expulsion has expired.
• We will honor sibling preference of currently enrolled students in our lottery drawing. The term “siblings” includes any of the following who reside in the same household: half-siblings, step-siblings, and children residing in a family foster home to be granted enrollment priority.
• Sibling applicants with shared birth dates (twins, triplets, etc.) will be admitted in the lottery together.
• All children in a family are “bundled” together under one unique lottery registration number, but will only be registered to run in the lottery under the name and grade of the oldest child (“Primary Registrant”). If the “Primary Registrant” child is admitted, all siblings bundled on the registration form will be eligible for placement in their respective grade level immediately, as long as there is an opening
•  The following groups will have enrollment priority at Kestrel Heights Charter School in the order that follows as space permits in each grade: 1. Children of full-time employees and board members (may not exceed 15% of the total school population) 2. Siblings of currently enrolled scholars who were admitted to the charter school in a previous year (as determined by Charter School law G.S. 115C-218.45(f)(1)) 3. Applicants who are currently enrolled in an NC charter School

IMPORTANT DATES

• Applications will be accepted beginning November 15th.
• The Application deadline for new year lottery is January 31st.
• The lottery will occur within two weeks of the end of open enrollment. The lottery date, time and location will be published on the school’s website by December 15th of each year.
